Daily Soda Consumption Increases Stroke Risk

Drinking regular soda may increase your risk of stroke, a new study suggests. In the study, men and women who consumed one or more sugar-sweetened sodas per day were 16 percent more likely to have a stroke over a 20- to 30-year period, compared with those who drank no soda.

"Soda remains the largest source of added sugar in the diet," said study researcher Dr. Adam Bernstein, of the Cleveland Clinic's Wellness Institute. "What we're beginning to understand is that regular intake of these beverages sets off a chain reaction in the body that can potentially lead to many diseases — including stroke."

Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages has previously been linked to weight gain, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, gout and coronary artery disease. Earlier studies have also found a link between diet soda consumption and an increased risk of stroke.

Jerusalem hospital shows off vaccine that destroys cancer in 2 shots

Early human test results suggest a vaccine can train cancer patients' bodies to seek out and destroy tumour cells.

The therapy, which targets a molecule found in 90 per cent of cancers, eventually could provide an injection that would allow patients' immune systems to fight off common cancers including breast andprostate cancer.

The first results of trials in people, at the Hadassah Medical Centre in Jerusalem, suggest the vaccine can reduce levels of disease. The human work is so preliminary it has yet to be published in a scientific journal.

The scientists behind the vaccine hope to conduct more extensive trials to prove it can be effective against a range of cancers. They believe it could be used to fight small tumours if they are detected early or to help prevent the return and spread of disease in patients who have undergone conventional treatment.

Gene discovery may soothe chronic pain

MCGILL/U. TORONTO (CAN) — The identification of a gene responsible for the pain receptor changes behind chronic pain could lead to individual treatments.

A major challenge for treating chronic pain is to understand why certain people develop pain while others, with apparently similar disorders or injuries, do not. An equally important challenge is to develop individualized therapies that will be effective in specific patient populations.

Research published online in Nature Medicine points to solutions to both challenges. A research team led by Jeffrey Mogil of McGill University and Michael Salter of The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), affiliated with the University of Toronto, has identified a major gene affecting chronic pain sensitivity. The findings also suggest a new approach to individualizing treatment of chronic pain.

The gene that the researchers identified encodes the pain receptor known as P2X7. Specifically, the scientists discovered that a single amino-acid change in P2X7 controls sensitivity to the two main causes of chronic pain: inflammation and nerve damage.

Titanic in 3D [MOVIE TRAILER]

Titanic Anniversary: How Newspapers Covered The Ship Sinking In 1912

The morning after Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, news of the ship's fate appeared on the front page of newspapers around the world.

The story, so shocking and frightening, appeared on front pages with a striking photograph of Titanic, coupled with huge copy announcing casualties. Headlines ranged from reporting that as many as 1,321 to 1,800 died as the ship went down in the North Atlantic ocean. The coverage of Titanic's sinking went from shock over the major loss of life to public outrage, as news of the ship's safety failures was widely reported.

The 100th year anniversary of Titanic has been commemorated in many ways, from ships offering Titanic-themed cruises (without the fatal ending, of course), James Cameron releasing the film "Titanic" in 3D, and the auctioning off of artifacts from the ship.

Take a look at how newspapers first covered Titanic's sinking in THIS SLIDESHOW.

5 Most Surprising Reasons to Drink Coffee

Feeling jittery about whether to drink coffee? Percolate on this: Coffee's benefits considerably outweigh its negatives, researchers now believe. Although caffeine can cause anxiety and insomnia in some people, the beverage's unique properties -- such as more powerful antioxidants than from any other source in the American diet, including fruits and vegetables -- can do a lot of good. Just be sure to spring for organic coffee, says Beth Reardon, director of nutrition for Duke Integrative Medicine, since coffee beans are among the most heavily sprayed crops (all those chemicals can undo the benefits). Grandparents scammed out of $2,100 by phony grandson

MADISON -- Police are warning people to be careful when asked for money over the phone -- even if the person who appears to be asking for help says he's your grandson.

A couple was the target of a phone scam on Wednesday when a man purporting to be their grandson called with a sad story, according to Madison Police Chief Barry Moores, who did not know the names of the couple.

The scammer, who knew the real name of the grandson, said he had accidentally bumped into someone on the street and caused him to fall down. He said he was in court and was being asked to pay money. He asked them to not tell his parents.

That's when a different man got on the phone with the grandparents and pretended to be a lawyer, saying the grandson needed $2,100.

The grandparents agreed to send the money by Western Union, only to learn afterward they'd been duped.

Anti-estrogen Combo Extends Life for Older Women with Metastatic Breast Cancer

Anastrozole (Arimidex) and fulvestrant (Faslodex) are both already used in treating breast cancer, though not in combination. The former reduces the production of tumor-promoting estrogen, while the latter interferes with the receptors that allow estrogen to signal cells to grow and reproduce.

Researchers think it's these two different modes of action together that make the combination so effective against hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, the subtype that accounts for more than half of all breast cancers. READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE.
